Person of interest: Jessica Mitaya, Print & Commercial Model

23 year old print and commercial model, Jessica Mitaya, is a student of Maseno University pursuing a degree in Bachelor of Education Arts with IT. She has participated in many beauty pageants and also auditioned in Miss Maseno 2016. Jessica’s goal is to improve her talent in modelling and mentor ladies who have a passion for the fashion industry. Here is her story

What made you become a model?

l used to take and post lots of pictures in posses usually done by models. With time, I developed into a hobby and my friends encouraged me to try modelling. From  then on, modelling has been my passion.

Who was your role model as a child an how did that help in being a model?

My Role model is Cecilia Mwangi, Miss Kenya 2016. We used to live in the same estate in Lang’ata. l used to admire her for her beauty and also initiating the anti-jigger campaign. The motivation I have for modeling and helping the less fortunate members of the society was partly acquired from her.

What did your parent first think of you being a model and where they supportive?

When my mum found out that l had a talent in modeling, she would always encourage me to pursue my dreams. My dad on the other wanted me to focus on my degree studies first, but he started being supportive after I participated in Miss Tourism Kisumu County.

How did you feel when you did your first ever fashion show or photo shoot?

My first ever fashion photo shoot was with my agency, fashionistas models at Dunga Beach. The ambience and scenery of the beach was awesome which automatically made me love all the photos l took.

If your were not a model, what other profession would you have been doing instead?

If l was not a model, l would have been a professional basketball player since l used to play it back then in high school.

What are guilty pleasures food wise?

Eating healthy is recommended, but l love junk food. Worst part comes in when I have to exercise a lot to stay in shape.

Are you against or for skin bleaching?

Please ladies stop bleaching it’s not a great decision. Since it’s much more difficult to apply makeup and look pretty after bleaching. Most ladies who bleach their skin are only doing so to attract sponsors. This mindset will eventually destroy the current and future generations. Ladies should learn to work hard and not expect free stuff.

If a young girl/boy wanted to be a model what would your advice for them be?

Begin by having courage, self control and respect. With those 3 virtues more opportunities will come your way. Have courage because you will be disappointed when going for auditions and being left out. Don’t give up, l never did. Models are usually exploited sexually but if you have self control, you will earn respect. Finally have respect for those people who hate you and help you because being a model you are a role model to many. The modelling industry is not easy but when you work hard, the fruits are sweet.

Would you date someone who was, overweight?

Its not wise judging a human being. All of us are created in God’s image. Currently I’m dating a guy who is naturally fit but I still respect people of different weights.

What are some of your favorite designers or clothes?

My favourite clothline is Vivo Wear. The clothes are stylish and for all body sizes.
