Eugene Ogello is a musician and model based in Kisumu and goes by the stage name MCK. He was a model at Delan Modelling Agency, owned by Dennis Nyakach and Linda Kadz, where he worked with many models including the beautiful Alvinah Ogot. In an exclusive one on one with him, this is what he had to say.
KenyaWest: How did the name MCK come about?
Eugene: I got the name when I was still at Lions High School in Kisumu. My school mates used to call me Kogello instead of Ogello. One day as I was MCeeing in an event, my friends started calling me MC K (K for Kogello). And that is how the name stuck to date. My long time friend Derrick Lumumba also encouraged me to continue using the name.
KenyaWest: Describe your singing style.
Eugene: My singing style is somehow complicated but i like doing unique stuff trying to mix afro pop and hip hop and at the same time trying to make it appeal to Kenyans.
KenyaWest: What is your taste in music?
Eugene: My taste in music is hip hop coz its the only genre I can do well. However, I still appreciate and love Kenyan jams.
KenyaWest: Who was your role model as a child an how did that help in being a model/musician?
Eugene: Musically, I was inspired by many Kenyan artists since I love Kenyan music. My current role models are Octopizzo and Khaligraph. I love the flow and rhymes in their songs. In modelling, my friends are my role models, they made me who I am. A big thank you goes to Kysh Roberts, a friend, brother, business partner and mentor. I really appreciate the guy. He even let me feature appear in his latest video song The world is mine.
KenyaWest: How did you feel when you did your first ever fashion show or photo shoot?
Eugene: It was so great and I was so proud of myself because the response from the audience was massive and fantastic. It was a high end fashion event at Acacia Premier Hotel when I was still a model at Delan Modelling Agency. The audience made me feel like a super star through their screaming. My first photo shoot was done by House of Mayom when I had not ventured into modelling. The photos enabled me to join Delan. A friend advised me to do modelling because he saw some potential in me and the rest as they say, is history.
KenyaWest: Tell us something little known about you.Embarrassing moments, favorite food, silly obsessions
Eugene: My most embarrassing moment happened at one of my biggest show when I was just new in the music industry. It was at the Mr and Miss Kisumu Polytechnic. When I was getting ready to get on stage to perform my music cd failed me terribly. The song refused totally to play and I had to walk off stage thoroughly embarrassed. My favourite food is pilau and chicken. My silliest obsession so far was when I joined form one. I had a serious crush on a certain lady whom after sometime I regretted having a crush on. Her character was wanting as I came to find out.
KenyaWest: What are your plans for the future?
Eugene: My plans for the future in music is to be as competitive as any other Kenyan artists if not the most hardworking Kenyan artist. In modelling, I would like to be a model coach/trainer and to also own a modelling agency
